US Supreme Court Cancels Trump Import Tariffs as Illegal
The Supreme Court of the United States has cancelled several import tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump in the United States. The court declared the tariffs illegal.
The court said the government cannot increase import duties arbitrarily. It also said imposing heavy tariffs on many countries is not lawful. The earlier tariff policy has now been withdrawn.
During the Trump administration, heavy tariffs were imposed on many countries including India. In some cases, duties were increased up to 50 percent. Even after reductions later, trade tensions continued.
After the ruling, many countries including India may receive refunds of collected duties. Questions have also arisen about the future tariff strategy.
