Odisha Plans Liquor Sale in Tetra Packs Instead of Glass Bottles

The Odisha government is planning to sell liquor in tetra packs instead of glass bottles in Odisha. The information was given by Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan in the Assembly through a written reply.
The proposal came after a question raised by MLA Sanatan Mahakud. The minister said the government is considering replacing glass bottles with tetra pack packaging.
The government said broken glass bottles often remain on roads. People and animals get injured due to this. Some people also misuse broken bottles. This creates safety and pollution problems. Tetra pack is a paper-based packaging system. It is light and easy to carry. It does not break like glass bottles. The government said it may be environmentally suitable.
According to the written reply, in 10 months till January 2025, 620 lakh litres of country liquor were sold in the state. During the same period, 82 lakh bulk litres of beer and 97 lakh litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor were sold.
The government has not announced when the system will start. It may be implemented under the new excise policy.People may see a change in liquor packaging after the decision is implemented.Further details are expected after official implementation steps.
