Daily Data Limits Expiry Sparks Concern Unused Data Forfeited at Midnight

Daily Data Limits in telecom recharge plans are facing scrutiny after an MP raised the matter in Parliament. Many users pay for daily data quotas that reset every 24 hours. Any unused portion expires at midnight.

Daily Data Limits often range from 1.5GB to 3GB per day in popular recharge plans from major telecom companies. The data resets daily. Unused data does not carry forward. It is forfeited even though users pay the full amount.

For example, if a user pays for 2GB but uses only 1.5GB, the remaining 0.5GB disappears when the day ends. There is no refund or rollover. This policy applies across major operators.AAP MP Raghav Chadha raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha on March 23, 2026. He questioned why data paid for should be forfeited. Chadha described it as a deliberate policy that forces users to either use data unnecessarily or lose it.

Chadha made three clear demands to address the problem.First, all telecom operators should allow Daily Data Limits rollover. Unused data at the end of the day should add to the next day’s limit. It should not erase when the day ends.Second, provide an option to adjust unused data against the next month’s recharge amount. If users consistently under-use data over cycles, they should get a discount or adjustment on future recharges.

Third, permit transfer of unused data to relatives and friends. Users should treat unused data as their property and transfer it to others, similar to sending money.Chadha stressed the need for fair policies in Digital India. Access to data should not depend on portions that disappear. Paid data should remain available for use.

Consumers face this issue daily with prepaid plans. Many recharge for high daily quotas but do not use the full amount. The current system leads to lost value without options for carry-forward or sharing. No immediate response from telecom companies or regulators has been announced. The matter highlights consumer concerns over data usage in mobile plans.
