They demanded the implementation of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. Delhi Police set up barricades to keep the students inside the campus area. The students planned a long march from the JNU campus to the Ministry of Education. The JNU administration denied permission for the march outside the campus. Delhi Police stopped the students when they tried to proceed.

The protest turned violent at the main gate. Students damaged barricades. They pelted sticks, banners, and shoes at the police. Some protesters physically assaulted officers. Several police personnel got injured in the clash. Reports said around 25 police officers were hurt, including senior officers like ACP Ved Prakash, ACP Sanghamitra, SHO Atul Tyagi, and SHO Ajai Yadav.

Police detained more than 50 students, including JNUSU president Aditi Mishra and former president Nitish Kumar. An FIR was registered against the protesters under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for obstructing public servants, causing hurt, and assault.

The university administration issued a statement on the matter. “JNUSU protestors are demanding UGC regulations to be implemented. This is in violation of the Honorable Supreme Court which issued a stay on the regulations. JNU Vice Chancellor or Registrar have no powers over the regulations.”The protest is part of ongoing issues at JNU. Students also demand action on the rustication of JNUSU office-bearers, the proposed Rohith Act, and the resignation of Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit over her recent remarks.

Students should expect continued restrictions on movement around the JNU campus. Police remain deployed with heavy barricades and security. Protesters face legal action following the FIR. No official update on release of detained students has come yet.The situation remains tense at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
