A scary new outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has started in West Bengal, India. Health officials say 5 people have tested positive for the virus. The cases came from a private hospital in India. Around 100 people who came in close contact with the infected ones are now in quarantine to stop the virus from spreading more.

What is Nipah Virus:
Nipah virus is a very serious illness that spreads from animals to people, and also from person to person. It first comes from fruit bats (flying foxes) that carry the virus. People can get it by touching things with bat spit or urine, eating fruits touched by bats, or coming close to infected pigs.
Once a person gets it, they can pass it to others through close contact, like coughing, sneezing, or touching body fluids.
The virus attacks the brain and lungs. It causes high fever, bad headache, vomiting, breathing problems.
there is no vaccine and no special medicine to cure it. Doctors can only give support care like medicines for symptoms.

What Should People Do to Stay Safe?
Avoid eating raw date palm sap
Do not touch sick bats or pigs.
Wash hands often with soap.
Wear masks in crowded places or hospitals.
If you have fever, headache, cough, or feel very tired, go to doctor right away and tell if you met someone sick.
