New SIM binding rule requires active SIM card for WhatsApp and other messaging apps to enhance security.
WhatsApp SIM binding rule will take effect from March 1 in India. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has set this requirement for messaging apps like WhatsApp. The rule aims to stop fraudsters from using accounts without the original SIM card.
The SIM binding rule links a user’s account to the active SIM card used during registration. If the SIM is not present in the device or becomes inactive, the app may stop working. This acts as a security measure. Fraudsters will no longer log in to WhatsApp on another phone using just the phone number.
The government issued the directive in November 2025 under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024. Companies had 90 days to comply. The deadline for compliance is February 28, 2026. From March 1, 2026, the WhatsApp SIM binding rule becomes mandatory.
WhatsApp SIM Binding Rule Details
Under the WhatsApp SIM binding rule, the app must verify that the registered SIM is physically inserted and active in the primary device. If the SIM is removed, replaced, or deactivated, access to the account can be blocked. This applies mainly to Indian phone numbers.
For web versions like WhatsApp Web, users will face automatic logout every six hours. They must re-scan the QR code to log in again. This extra step helps confirm the presence of the active SIM in the phone.The rule covers other apps too. Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, and similar platforms must follow the same WhatsApp SIM binding rule guidelines. The government says this will reduce cyber fraud and improve user safety.
Users should keep their registered SIM card active and inserted in their phone. If you change your SIM or use a device without a SIM slot, WhatsApp may not function properly after March 1.People who travel abroad or use eSIMs need to check if their setup meets the requirement. The rule focuses on preventing misuse of accounts for scams.
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed no extension to the deadline. He said the measure addresses national security and fraud concerns.Users in India with WhatsApp should prepare for these changes starting March 1, 2026. Keep your SIM active to avoid any disruption in service.
