Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes the first recipient of the Medal of the Knesset for strengthening India-Israel ties.
Medal of the Knesset was awarded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on Wednesday(25/02/2026). This marks the first time the honor has been given. Knesset Speaker MK Amir Ohana presented the medal during a ceremony in the Knesset plenum in Jerusalem.
The event took place as part of Modi’s historic visit to the Knesset. Modi addressed the plenum before receiving the award. He is the first Indian prime minister to speak before the Knesset.The Medal of the Knesset is a new honorary decoration. It recognizes individuals and organizations for major contributions to the State of Israel and the Jewish people. It also honors efforts to promote the Knesset’s core values.
A selection committee chose Modi as the first recipient. They noted that he significantly strengthened ties between India and Israel. Under his leadership, strategic cooperation has deepened. This includes expanded work in security and technology. Joint developments in security technology, innovation, and cyber fields have grown. Modi has also worked to build stronger political and cultural relations. He has made Israel a central partner for India in the Middle East.
Medal of the Knesset Design and Features
The medal is made of gold-plated bronze. One side shows the state emblem, the Knesset building, and flags in the Knesset plaza. The other side shows the Knesset Plenum. It carries the verse “Hast crowned him with glory and honor” from Psalms 8:6, with olive branches beside it. The edge has an embossing of Western Wall stones. It comes with silver and blue ribbons and a Star of David pendant.
Knesset Speaker MK Amir Ohana spoke at the ceremony. He said, “This is a historic moment for the Knesset and for the entire State of Israel. Conferring the decoration on Prime Minister Modi expresses our deep appreciation for his work to create a strategic alliance between Israel and India. His policy is an expression of a courageous, consistent and sincere friendship with the State of Israel, and of a firm stand by its side even in complex and challenging times.”
The award highlights the growing partnership between the two countries. It shows recognition for Modi’s consistent support and efforts to advance bilateral relations.People can expect continued cooperation in areas like defense, technology, and innovation. The honor reinforces the strong friendship between India and Israel at the leadership level.
