Gukesh Dommaraju has returned to the top 10 in the March 2026 FIDE rankings. The reigning world champion from India climbed back after the International Chess Federation fixed an error in the rating calculation.FIDE published the March 2026 rating list earlier this month. It included results from events like the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee. An error occurred due to an oversight in the approval process.

The Russian Chess Crown match was wrongly included in the list. This tournament did not follow FIDE rules. Article 0.2.1 of the FIDE Rating Regulations requires tournaments to be registered at least 30 days in advance if a player rated over 2700 takes part.Because of the mistake, Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin appeared in the active players list. His inclusion temporarily affected the rankings.

FIDE identified the error last Monday. The Qualification Commission removed the Russian Chess Crown match from the rating system. This followed the applicable rules.Sergey Karjakin’s status changed to inactive. His name was removed from the list of active players in the FIDE rating list. Karjakin has not played enough official rated games in recent years.

The correction restored the proper order. Gukesh Dommaraju now holds position 10 with a rating of 2748. This places him back among the world’s elite chess players.Gukesh Dommaraju remains the highest-ranked Indian player.
